How often to descale an espresso machine (and how to do it)
Descaling is the process your manufacturer defines, in your manual. This guide explains the general cadence, the signs that matter more than the calendar, and a safe step-by-step method that starts and ends with the manual.
Always use the descaler and method your manual specifies. Never mix descalers, never improvise concentrations, and never run a descale cycle the manual does not describe for your model.
Frequency
How often, in practice
A common pattern is to descale every two to six months in hard-water areas, roughly every three months with daily use, and less often where the water is soft. The interval that matters is the one your manual states for your water and use. The signs below count for more than any calendar date:
- Slower flow from the group than the machine used to deliver.
- Weaker steam than usual.
- Visible scale on the tank lid, the shower screen, or the drip area.
- A machine error code or indicator that points to scale, per the manual.
- Heat-up times that have crept longer over weeks.

- Read the manual's descale procedure for your model, start to finish.
- Have the recommended descaler, not a substitute you hope will work.
- Empty the water tank and clean it out.
- Have fresh water ready for the rinse cycles.
- Allow enough time; the wait stages are part of the process, not padding.
The method
A step-by-step that starts with the manual
Prepare
Power off or unplug the machine, remove and clean the water tank, and follow any prep steps the manual lists for your model.
Mix the solution
Use the manual's descaler and the ratio it gives. Do not mix brands and do not reuse old solution.
Run the descale cycle
Follow the manual's sequence, usually running solution through the group and the steam wand in stages. Keep the portafilter in or out exactly as instructed.
Let it work
Most procedures pause so the solution can dissolve scale. Do not shorten the wait; it is where the descaling actually happens.
Rinse thoroughly
Follow the rinse stages for your exact model and manual revision. Do not taste or drink descaling solution or rinse discharge. Never use taste as a safety test.

The guide specifies a thorough tank rinse, a refill with fresh cold water to MAX (2 litres), a machine rinse and POWER to leave descaling mode. However, its instruction to “repeat steps 4-6” is ambiguous: step 6 refers back to itself, while the coffee-component stage is step 3. The same page warns against completely emptying the tank during descaling, yet step 6 says to empty the solution in it. This is a Europe-manual example, not a verified UK-specific variant match. Confirm that this manual applies to your machine before following its stages:
- Steam-wand rinse, steps 8-10: rinse the tank, fill with fresh drinking water and empty the drip tray. Place a container under the steam wand. Open the steam/hot-water knob slowly anticlockwise and press the brew and steam buttons. Dispense the whole tank through the wand, then press both buttons again and close the knob clockwise.
- Filter-holder rinse, steps 11-14: refill with fresh drinking water, lock the filter holder into the brew unit and place a container underneath. Press the coffee button to dispense the whole tank through the filter holder. Stop with the coffee button when the tank is empty, empty the container, then remove and rinse the filter holder with fresh drinking water.
- Repeat and finish, steps 15-17: repeat the operations from step 8 once, making four rinse tanks in total. Refill with fresh water afterwards and, if necessary, follow the manual’s “Loading the Circuit” instructions.

These are different documented routines, not interchangeable rinse counts. Use the complete instructions supplied for your model, including its safety warnings.
Finish and record
Wipe the machine down, note the date, reset the service indicator if the manual describes one, and put the next descale on the calendar.
Why it matters
What scale actually does
Scale is mostly calcium. It insulates heating elements, so the machine heats slower and draws more energy for the same result, and it narrows water paths, so flow and steam weaken. In hard-water areas it is normal wear, handled by the descale process, not a reason for alarm and not a reason to replace the machine.

Can I descale with vinegar?
Some manuals permit it and many do not, and concentration matters a great deal. Use what your manual specifies and do not substitute without checking it first; acids can damage machines not designed for them.
How do I know the descale worked?
Flow and steam speed usually return, and the machine completes a full rinse cycle cleanly. If problems remain after rinsing, the manual's troubleshooting section, or a qualified service visit, is the next step.
What happens if I never descale?
With hard water, scale builds up over time: the machine heats slower, flows weaker, and steams less forcefully. It is buildup, not sudden failure, and it is recoverable; the manual's process applies whenever you start.
Does descaling affect my warranty?
Warranty terms are set by the maker and typically require reasonable care as described in the manual. If your machine is under warranty, follow the manual precisely and keep any service records it asks for.
